Paw Paw

I bumped into two of our favorite people the other day in Lambertville, NJ. Christopher Hirsheimer and Melissa Hamilton were getting coffee before heading into their studio for a day of Canal House greatness and they seemed happy to see me. A friend of theirs had just unloaded a peck of paw paws that were quickly attracting fruit flies. They were eager to unload a few and when I mentioned that I'd never tasted a paw paw, they insisted I stop by - immediately.

The real thing.

The real thing.

The fruit is surprisingly luscious and has a mild honey flavor. When I mentioned it to Geraldine, she reminded me about a bottle of mead that is sitting in our basement. She picked it up on a trip to Ohio and until I tasted the paw paw, I didn't really get it, but honey-flavored fruit and honey wine has got to be a great pairing.

This weekend's plan (in addition to a little book signing at Farley's Bookshop in New Hope - stop by at 1pm on Saturday) is to have a paw paw and mead tasting.
